What is OpenCourseWare?

The following is an overview of our  OpenCourseWare programme. Please note we have set-up special websites dedicated to this initiative. Have a look at our Geology course.

We're developing a series of programmes and courses using materials from several top international universities (with their permission ofcourse!).

Thanks to an initiative called The OpenCourseWare Consortium, The English Programme With Steve is developing a series of podcasts using materials from the Open University's OpenLearn and many similar educational institutions from around the world including the Mathematical Institute at Oxford University.

We will begin producing podcasts using course materials fom the University Of Notre Dame OCW very soon. The materials will be used under a Creative Commons licence.

The university has recently given us permission to use the course notes and in due time we will publish the podcasts as well as full credit to Notre Dame OCW and the faculty author(s).

For our podcasts we'll also be using course materials made available for free use to the OCW by Michigan State University, the University of Nottingham, the University of Massachusetts, Boston and the University of California, Irvine - to name but a few.

OpenCourseWare does not typically provide certification or access to instructors, however it does offer high quality educational materials, organized as courses and is available for use and adaptation by both students and teachers under an open license.

The OpenCourseWare Consortium is a collaboration of more than 200 higher education institutions and associated organizations from around the world creating a broad and deep body of open educational content using a shared model.

The mission of the OpenCourseWare Consortium is to advance education and empower people worldwide through opencourseware.

The Goals of the Consortium

1. Extend the reach and impact of opencourseware by encouraging the adoption and adaptation of open educational materials around the world.
2. Foster the development of additional opencourseware projects.
3. Ensure the long-term sustainability of opencourseware projects by identifying ways to improve effectiveness and reduce costs.

Participation Requirements - How your institution can offer free materials to the OCW

In order to participate in Consortium activities, institutions must have committed to publishing, under the institution's name, materials from at least 10 courses in a format that meets the agreed-upon definition of an opencourseware.

Organisations that do not publish their own content but whose activities further Consortium goals—such as translation and distribution affiliates—also participate in Consortium activities.

Once you've joined The OpenCourseWare Consortium we can use your materials in our podcasts.
